The medieval city of Jaipur is made in a grid pattern and this grid pattern is known as the ‘Mandala’ grid, meaning a square divided into smaller, symmetrical sections. The city is laid in a 3x3 grid system with each of the nine squares representing a celestial body (Nine Planets) of our solar system. In the spiritual context, the Mandala layout was used here to align spaces with cosmic forces and deities to achieve harmony. This systematic, spiritually inspired grid layout created a distinctive, organized urban fabric that remains evident even today in Jaipur's historic Pink City. This city represents a rare blending of Hindu Town planning texts (Vastu Shastra) with practical urbanism and astronomical interest.
In order to understand the architecture and the spiritual essence of this town one needs to explore it slowly by walking through narrow lanes and Gateways.
This city was planned in manner to provide different residential and market place to different communities and artists and still most of the streets are inhabited by people belonging to particular trade and professions.
